Furor Musicus

Our new CD has arrived! After Nozeman, we recorded the sonatas for violin and continuo by another Dutch composer: Pieter Hellendaal (Rotterdam 1721-Cambridge 1799) !!

Hellendaal published 3 sets of 6 sonatas, another set of 11 sonatas survived in manuscript. This CD contains virtuosic sonatas from all 4 collections.

Hellendaal must have been a gifted violinist; all his sonatas are technically demanding and feature many unusual and ingenious techniques. At the same time, Hellendaal’s music is often characterised by folky elements, revealed in unusual harmonies, unusual patterns and fiery rhythms, and always with the hint of a wink.

Hellendaal lived in Rotterdam, Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leiden. He was appointed as the organist of the Nicolaïkerk in Utrecht at the age of 10. The financial support of the town secretary of Amsterdam, Lestevenon, enabled Hellendaal to study the violin and composition with the famous violinist Giuseppe Tartini in Padua somewhere between 1737 - 1743. It is not known exactly why Hellendaal left for London around 1751, but it seems that he had found it impossible to build up a concert practice in the Netherlands. At the time England was enjoying a period of peace and stability and musical life bloomed in London, attracting many musicians and music publishers to the city. In 1762 Hellendaal moved to Cambridge, where he spent the rest of his life.
